Mid-east Mfg.  Cittren 9 String Walnut (also cithren), is a plucked  string instrument  from the family of box necked lutes. It exists in a variety of designs, which is why the cistern is not regarded as a particular instrument, but rather an instrument family. The typical cittern still found in many museums is a form in which the neck becomes thicker toward the body, giving the body a slight incline shape when viewed from the side. Originally, the cittern belonged mainly to the medieval drone-style instruments, with the so-called Italian tuning (gg hh d’d’ e’e’) or the French tuning (aa ggg d’d’ e’e’) and in the 16th century was played using four courses: the melody would be played on the 4th or 3rd course, while the next lowest strings were open strummed drones. Fun, lightweight and easy to play, our Deluxe Wildwood Dulcimer   has the rich sound of a mountain dulcimer with just a little bit of banjo twang. The body style of the Wildwood allows it to be played like a guitar instead of the traditional “flat in the lap” position of the mountain dulcimer. The teardrop spruce soundboard with two F-shaped sound holes stands out in contrast to the long, thin Rosewood finger board.   The overall Length is 34 1/2″, Width 7 1/8″ and Height 2 1/4″.   The Wildwood has four string courses which are loop end strings: a wound string at the top, an unwound center string, and two unwound strings tuned in unison, at the bottom. The carved scroll peg head features gold colored, geared 4:1 banjo style tuners. Many tunings will work, but we recommend the traditional DADD to make it easy to pick up and play.
